Fiber Broadband Association Middle Mile Working Group Releases Framework for Strengthening State Fiber Infrastructure

This week, the Fiber Broadband Association (FBA) released guidance from its Middle Mile Working Group outlining how states can strengthen digital infrastructure through coordinated fiber backbone investment.

The framework introduces the concept of Digital Infrastructure Networks—strategic fiber systems that connect the core internet backbone to last-mile broadband providers. By strengthening these middle-mile connections, states can reduce the cost of broadband deployment, improve network resiliency, and expand connectivity to unserved and underserved communities.

Capacity, Competition & Cash Flow — The Upstream Equation

For years, broadband conversations have centered on download speeds: how fast content reaches users and how quickly networks can scale to meet streaming demand. But that framing is starting to break. On this week’s Fiber for Breakfast, Gary sat down with Mark Trudeau of OpenVault and Jeff Heynen of Dell’Oro Group to explore a shift that’s been building quietly: upstream traffic is no longer a side story—it’s becoming the main event.
